Enrolling in Okta for the First Time Using a Yubikey (Without a Smartphone)

Details

This article assumes you do not have a smartphone, but you have already obtained a Yubikey hardware token and have it with you.  To begin Okta enrollment, first go to a computer and open your JMU email account. Click the Activate Okta Account link in your "Welcome to JMU Okta" invitation email. This will take you to mylogin.jmu.edu.

You will be asked to enter your JMU eID and then create a password, for the first time. Once you have reached this stage, you are ready for the steps below.

 

On a Windows Device

  1. Under Set up Security Methods, Click Set Up under Security Key or Biometric Authenticator.
  2. Click Set Up on the following screen.

  3. You will receive a Windows Security alert. Click OK.
  4. On the following pop-up, select Security Key, and click Next

  6. Click Ok to continue setup
  7. Insert your Yubikey into an available USB port
  8. Tap the button on the Yubikey with your finger (it should light up briefly, letting you know it's ready to be enrolled).

  9. You will receive a notification that the Passkey has been saved after a moment.  Click OK.
  10. You are informed that you may optionally setup Okta Verify on a smartphone, but if you wish to choose so at a later time, clich Continue to complete process.

On a macOS Device

  1. Under Set up Security Methods, Click Set Up under Security Key or Biometric Authenticator.
  2. Click Set Up on the following screen.

  3. A System Settings message will appear. Select Other Options.
  4. Select Security Key

  5. Insert your Yubikey into an available USB port.
  6. Tap the button on the Yubikey with your finger (it should light up briefly, letting you know it's ready to be enrolled).

  7. You are informed that you may optionally setup Okta Verify on a smartphone, but if you wish to choose so at a later time, click Continue to complete process.
