How to enroll in Okta Verify with a Yubikey (without a smartphone)

This article assumes you do not have a smartphone, but you have already obtained a Yubikey hardware token and have it with you.  To begin Okta enrollment, click the Activate Okta Account link in your invitation email.  You may be asked to log in with your eID/password or to set your password for the first time.  Once you have reached this stage, you are ready for the steps below.

On a Windows Device

1. When you first enroll in Okta, you have not yet set up any security methods.  Okta will ask you to set up either Okta Verify (the smartphone app) or a security key. Click Set Up under Security Key, and click Set Up again on the screen that follows.

2. You will then receive a windows security alert, click OK.

3. On the following security pop-up select Security Key and click Next

4. Click Ok

5. Insert your Yubikey into an open USB slot and then tap the sensor with your finger (it should light up briefly, letting you know it's ready to be enrolled). 

6. You have now set up your Yubikey. Click OK

7. When you see the following page, you have successfully enrolled in Okta with your Yubikey! You may optionally setup Okta Verify on a smartphone, but you may continue (click Continue) if you do not have a smartphone.

On a macOS Device

1. When you first enroll in Okta, you have not yet set up any security methods.  Okta will ask you to set up either Okta Verify (the smartphone app) or a security key. Click Set Up under Security Key, and click Set Up again on the screen that follows.

2. On the first pop-up, select Other Options. 

3. On the next pop-up, select Security Key

4. Insert your Yubikey into an open USB slot and then tap the sensor with your finger (it should light up briefly, letting you know it's ready to be enrolled). 

5. When you see the following page, you have successfully enrolled in Okta with your Yubikey! You may optionally setup Okta Verify on a smartphone, but you may continue (click Continue) if you do not have a smartphone.
