Details

When you replace your smartphone, updating your Okta security settings is essential to maintain access to your account. Follow these steps to add your new device and remove the old one.

JMU IT also recommends enrolling at least two devices—such as a phone, tablet, or Yubikey—in Okta Verify or Okta FastPass. While not mandatory, doing so ensures you have multiple secure access options and the ability to use self-service tools.

Important:

Do not reset or return your old phone just yet! Without it, you will not be able to update your Okta security settings.

If you no longer have your old phone accessible, please contact the JMU IT Help Desk via phone at 540-568-3555 for further assistance.

Enrolling your New Smartphone:

  1. In a web browser, visit mylogin.jmu.edu.
  2. Sign in with your eID and password and authenticate your sign-in using your old smartphone.
  3. Click the button/drop-down at the top-right of the page with your name and MyLogin.
  4. In the menu that appears, click My Settings.
  5. Authenticate your sign-in using your old smartphone.
  6. Click the Manage Security Methods button.
  7. Next to Okta Verify, click the Set up another button.
  8. Authenticate your sign-in using your old smartphone.
  9. Once verified, follow the on-screen instructions to enroll your chosen device.
  10. When you return to the Security Methods page, your new smartphone should appear.

Removing your Old Smartphone:

  1. On the Security Methods page, locate the old smartphone and click the Remove button next to it.
    1. Note: Be careful to remove the correct device. Enrollment dates and last used dates are shown to help with your choice. Mobile devices may show a generic name unless you have named your device in its settings.
  2. When asked if you are sure, confirm that you are sure by clicking Yes.
  3. Authenticate your sign-in using your new smartphone.
  4. When you return to the Security Methods page, the removed device should no longer appear.
