Details

This article will walk you through setting up FastPass on a personal computer. This is not recommended as your only authentication method, as this only allows for authentication into your account through this singular device. JMU IT recommends this setup be performed after you have already registered either Okta Verify for mobile phone, or have set up a security key (Yubikey) for your account.

Windows

Note for Windows computer users, you will need to have either a fingerprint reader built-in, or a built-in webcam that supports Windows Hello to enable passwordless sign in through Okta FastPass.

  1. Go to mylogin.jmu.edu

  2. Select "Sign in with Okta FastPass"

  3. On initial setup select Download here.

  4. Complete the installation. You will need to be an administrator of your computer to allow installation to complete.

  5. After the Okta FastPass software is installed, go back to the sign in page and select "Open Okta Verify". In the pop up, check the box next to always allow then click Open Okta Verify.

  6. On the Okta Verify app, click Get started, then Next.

  7. When prompted, complete the web page sign in with your eID, password, and 2-factor authentication method of yourc choice. After completion, your computer will bring Okta Verify to the front, and ask you to enable Windows Hello confirmation. Click Enable on this page.
    1. Note: If you do not want to enable Windows Hello, or use your biometric authenticator with Okta Verify, you can select Skip. This becomes another authenticator you can use to access your accounts online, as well as help you to register a new device if your current main authentication method is unavailable.

  8. If Windows Hello is not yet set up on your device, it will then move you to the set up process if you click Settings.

  9. Verify with your computer password

  10. Next, click here to view Microsoft's article on how to set up Windows Hello for your device.

  11. Once completed, return to the Okta Verify app, and click Enable again. It will give you a complete screen, and return to the homepage listing your account. Setup is now complete.

MacOS

For MacOS users, you will need to have a fingerprint reader available with your computer to enable passwordless authentication through Okta FastPass.

  1. Open your preferred web browser, and navigate to mylogin.jmu.edu.

  2. Select Sign in with Okta FastPass.

  3. Click Download Here. This will automatically open the App Store on your Mac computer. You will need to be signed into your personal Apple ID in order to download the Okta Verify app.
    1. Note: If you do not already have an Apple ID, JMU IT strongly discourages using your @dukes.jmu.edu or @jmu.edu email address to register. Whenever you would lose access to your email through JMU, your account would be locked behind that sign in, and JMU IT cannot assist in recovering your account. Registering with your personal email address allows you to retain full control of your account.

  4. Once downloaded and installed, you will find the Okta Verify app in the top right corner of your computer.

  5. Return to the sign in page on your web browser, and click Open Okta Verify. In the popup, check the box to always allow, and click Open Okta Verify.

  6. On the Okta Verify app, click Get started, and then Next.

  7. This will automatically open another tab in your web browser. Complete the sign in with your eID, password, and 2-factor authentication method of your choice. Once complete, Okta Verify will move to the front of your screen. It will ask if you want to enable Touch ID or password confirmation.
    1. Note: If you do not have your fingerprint set up with your Mac computer, or do not want to, you can click Not Now. This will stop the process after setting up on-device Okta Verify. This becomes another authenticator you can use to access your accounts online, as well as help you to register a new device if your current main authentication method is unavailable.

  8. When you click enable, it will confirm the setting has been turned on for your account, and return to the home page.
    1. If you do not have your fingerprint configured in your computer, you will need to set up the fingerprint reader for FastPass. You can follow the instructions below to set up your fingerprint reader
      1. Click the Apple icon in the top-left hand corner of your computer, and open System Settings
      2. In the left-most menu, search for Touch ID
      3. In the center of the new menu, click Add Fingerprint. It will have you confirm your computer password.

      4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your fingerprint to unlock your Mac.

      5. Once completed, you will be able to unlock your Mac with your fingerprint, as well as allow passwordless authentication through Okta FastPass. This should automatically prompt the next time you sign in through your browser to any Okta-authenticated site.

If you have any questions during the setup process, or are having trouble with signing in using FastPass, please reach out to the JMU IT Help Desk at helpdesk@jmu.edu or 540-568-3555.
