How to Remove and Re-Add Email Account on All Supported Clients

Details

Below are the steps to add or remove email accounts for all supported email clients.  If you are unable to access your @jmu.edu or @dukes.jmu.edu email account on one of these clients, please try removing and re-adding your email account on your client using the instructions below.

Note: If you have any issues with these steps, contact the IT Help Desk at 540-568-3555.  In the interim, you can access Outlook on the web at outlook.office365.com

Outlook Mobile (iOS)

  • Adding your Account
  1. Open the Microsoft Outlook app on your device and tap Get Started
  2. Enter your JMU Email and tap Add Account
  3. Enter your eID password then click Sign in
  4. Complete the Okta prompt
  • Removing the Account
  1. Open the Microsoft Outlook app on your device
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-left of the screen to view your accounts and folders
  3. Tap the Settings Icon in the lower-right
  4. Tap on your JMU Email account under Mail Accounts
  5. Scroll down and tap Delete Account at the bottom of this page to remove it from the app

 

Outlook Mobile for Android:

Note: these steps may differ slightly on different Android versions and applications

  • Adding the Account
  1. Open the Microsoft Outlook app and tap Get Started
  2. Enter your Email Address, then tap Add Account
  3. Enter your eID password then click Sign in
  4. Complete the Okta prompt
  5. Decide whether to Enable Notifications. Tap Turn On if you wish to ensure your email Inbox is always up-to-date
  • Removing the Account
  1. Tap your Outlook email app icon
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-left of the screen to view your accounts and folders
  3. On the bottom left, tap Settings (Gear icon)
  4. Tap your JMU Email Account
  5. A new window will appear, scroll down and tap Delete Account

 

Microsoft Outlook on Windows 10 and 11

  • Adding the Account
  1. Open the Microsoft Outlook application and tap Get Started
  2. Enter your JMU Email, then tap Add Account
  3. Enter your eID password then click Sign in
  4. Complete the Okta prompt
  5. Select either Done or Add Another Account if you choose
  • Removing the Account
  1. Click the Windows icon in the lower-left of the screen
  2. Select or search Control Panel
  3. Click the View by drop down list on the right and set to Large icons
  4. Locate and click on Mail (...), such as Mail (32 -bit) or Mail(Microsoft Outlook)
  5. Select Show Profiles
  6. Click add and name the new profile (for example, “Work” or something to distinguish from the original)
  7. The add account window should open. The email account should automatically fill in, otherwise update as required
  8. Click Next
  9. Click Finish
  10. After the new profile has been created, ensure that prompt for a profile to be used is selected in both the box and the drop-down option
  11. Close, and then re-open Outlook
  12. Select the new profile
  13. If the new profile works as desired, set Outlook to use this profile always by:
  • Click or search Control Panel
  • Click Mail (...), then Show Profiles.
  • Click Always use this profile and select the new profile your created
  • Click Apply, then OK

 

Microsoft Outlook on MacOS

  • Adding the Account
  1. Open the Microsoft Outlook application and tap Get Started
  2. Enter your JMU Email Address, then tap Add Account
  3. Enter your eID password then click Sign in
  4. Complete the Okta prompt
  5. Select either Done or Add Another Account if you choose
  • Removing the Account
  1. Open Outlook
  2. Select Outlook in the top-left
  3. Click Settings
  4. Click Accounts
  5. Click on the account you wish to remove in the left-hand box (for example, Exchange)
  6. Click the Minus (-) icon
  7. Select Sign Out or Delete in the box that appears to confirm

Symptoms

  • Can't access email
  • Email keeps prompting for a password
