How Do I Apply a Sensitivity Label to a Document

In Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel 

  • With the document open, locate the Sensitivity command under the Home tab

  • Select the Sensitivity label you want to use for this document.

  • Hovering over any label name will give the description of that label. These descriptions match the ones in the table above.

  • Once a label is chosen, a colored shield icon will appear next to the document name. Hovering over this shield icon will display the name of the label selected.

  • Protected and Highly Confidential labels will automatically place a header at the top of each page/slide/sheet alerting the user that a particular label has been chosen for the document.

  • Highly Confidential labels will automatically place a Highly Confidential watermark behind the content on all pages/slides/sheets in the document.

PDF Files 

Unless a PDF is created originaly in Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint originally, adding a label to a preexisting PDF is currently not available, but may be in the future as Information Technology explores this further. If you are interested in creating an original document and exporting it as a PDF to retain a specific label, you can follow Microsoft’s documentation, found here
