Details

If you see a prompt from Microsoft Authenticator when logging into an Office 365 application or your JMU email on your mobile device, it is likely that your account has been accidentially connected to Microsoft Authenticator. This may occur if:

  • You use Microsoft Authenticator for other Applications or for other institutions (such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, etc.)
  • You no longer use Microsoft Authenticator, however you still have the App installed on your mobile device

While there is no issue using Microsoft Authenticator in conjunction with Duo, doing so can cause a slight delay when attempting to verify a Duo Push authentication. Unfortutunately, if you actively use Microsoft Authenticator, you will be required to use due to changes in Microsoft's Mult-Factor Authentication policies. However, If you no longer need Microsoft Authenticator (and do not wish to use it), you can simply uninstall the App from your prior to logging into your Office 365 or JMU Email.

If you wish to remove Microsoft Authenticator from being an additional factor for JMU Authentication, you can follow these steps to remove your JMU account(s) and remove the App:

  1. On your mobile device, close all Office 365 Apps that may be currently open (Outlook, Teams, Office 365, etc.)
  2. Locate and open the Microsoft Authenticator App
  3. Tap the account you want to remove
    1. This may be notated by Microsoft Entra ID followed by your JMU email
  4. Tap the Settings icon at the top-right
  5. Tap Remove Account
    1. If prompted, select Remove All apps on this Device
  6. Once the account has been removed, you can then close out of Microsoft Authenticator and Remove the App, doing so before logging into your office products

If you have issue signing into a Microsoft Office product with Microsoft Authenticator, are unable to remove your account, are persistently asked to use the App or other issues, please reach out to the IT Help Desk directly where we can better assist.
