This article will walk you through setting up Okta Fastpass on a personally-owned Windows or Mac device. This is not recommended as your only authentication method, but rather as a secondary or backup method, as this only allows for authentication into your account through this singular device. JMU IT recommends this setup be performed only after you have already registered either Okta Verify for mobile phone, or have set up a security key (Yubikey) for your account. Windows 11 Device Note for Windows computer users, you will need to have either a fingerprint reader built-in, or a built-in webcam that supports Windows Hello to enable passwordless sign in through Okta FastPass. - In a web browser, go to mylogin.jmu.edu
- Select "Sign in with Okta FastPass"
- On the new screen, select Download here to download the Okta Verify Application

- Once the download completed, click the completed download in the browser or click and run the installer from your Downloads Folder, and complete the installation process.
- Note: you will need to be an administrator of your computer to allow installation to complete.

- Once Okta Verify is installed, return to your web browser and go back to the sign-in page (If you have closed the page, simply return to mylogin.jmu.edu).
- Select Sign in with Okta FastPass, and in the new page, now select Open Okta Verify.
- Note: If a pop-up appears asking to "Always allow mylogin.jmu.edu to open links of this type in the associated app," check the box to allow then click Open Okta Verify.
- In the Okta Verify app, click Get started in and then Next to begin adding a new account.
- You will be prompted in your default browser to complete Okta verification
- Once successfully authenticated, the Okta Verify App will display your eID, and ask to enable Windows Hello.
- Click Enable, and a message will be displayed to set up Windows Hello. Click Settings.
- Note: If you do not wish to set up Windows Hello at this time (or have not yet done so), you can click Skip. Doing so will not enable Okta FastPass (i.e., passwordless or biometric authentication), but instead enroll your device as a secondary authentication method, much like a mobile device. You can set Windows Hello at any point after initial setup.
  - Windows Settings will open to the Sign-in Options screen. To complete enrollment, you will be asked to set one of three options: Facial Recognition, Fingerprint Recognition, or PIN.
- For Okta FastPass and Passwordless sign-in, your device will need to have a biometric authenticator set. If you see "this option is currently unavailable" under either Facial Recognition and/or Fingerprint Recognition, then your device does not meet the hardware requirements to enroll in those options, and you will only be able to use a PIN.
- Additional information can be found here to regarding setting up Windows Hello for your device.
 - Once you have selected which Sign-in method to use - one or multiple, if able or desired, you will finalize enrollment by providing your Personal device password
- Once completed, return to the Okta Verify app, and click Enable again. It will give you a complete screen, and return to the homepage listing your account.
Apple macOS Devices For MacOS users, you will need to have a fingerprint reader available with your computer to enable passwordless authentication through Okta FastPass. - In a web browser, go to mylogin.jmu.edu
- Select "Sign in with Okta FastPass"
- On the new screen, select Download here to download the Okta Verify App

- The Apple App Store will open automatically and attempt to download the Okta Verify App.
- Note: You will need to be signed into your personal Apple ID in order to download the Okta Verify app. If you do not already have an Apple ID, JMU IT strongly discourages using your @dukes.jmu.edu or @jmu.edu email address, and instead encourages creating one with your personal email address (i.e., Google, Hotmail, Verizon).
- Once Installed, at the top of your Apple Device in your Taskbar, you should see the Okta Verify icon.

- Return to the sign in page on your web browser, and click Open Okta Verify. In the popup, check the box to always allow, and click Open Okta Verify.
- On the Okta Verify app, click Get started, and then Next.
- You will be prompted in your default browser to complete Okta verification
- Once successfully authenticated, the Okta Verify App will display your eID, and will ask if you want to enable Touch-ID or password confirmation.
- Note: if your Apple device does not have a fingerprint reader, it is recommended to click Not Now. For Okta FastPass and Passwordless sign-in, your device will need to have a fingerprint authenticator set. Stopping at this point will enroll your device as a secondary authentication method, much like a mobile device.

- Click Enable, and the Okta Verify app will confirm the setting has been turned on for your account.
- If you do not have a fingerprint configured on your device, you will need to do so prior to using Okta FastPass.
- Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of your device, and select System Settings
- In the left-hand menu, select Touch ID & Password or search for Touch ID at the top in the search bar.
- Click Add Fingerprint, confirming your device's login password
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your fingerprint to unlock your Mac.

- Once complete, Okta FastPass will be fully enabled for passwordless authentication.
